Rocky Mountain Whitefish in Alberta: The Underrated River Fish
The Rocky Mountain whitefish is the most common fish in many Alberta rivers and one of the most underrated. It fights well, rises to small flies, and often means you have found the right water for trout.
How to identify a mountain whitefish

A mountain whitefish has large scales, no spots, a small mouth and no teeth. Its colour is bronze-white or greenish-white.
The small, underslung mouth is the clue that it feeds mostly on the bottom.
Where to find mountain whitefish in Alberta
Mountain whitefish are native to most waters of western Alberta and are known locally as Rocky Mountain whitefish. They travel in large schools from pool to pool, and adults migrate to spawn in the fall and to feed in the spring.
If you catch one, there are usually more nearby.
Behaviour and feeding
They feed mainly on bottom-dwelling aquatic insects and also on insects that fall onto the surface, plus smaller fish and fish eggs. Eggs and milt are laid directly on the bottom, and eggs hatch in early to mid-March.
Because they are often feeding on the bottom, nymphs fished deep and slow are the most reliable approach.

Guide’s tip: a small nymph, a good drift and a quick strike. Whitefish bites are subtle.
A trout’s dinner: whitefish are the main prey of bull trout, which is one reason they matter to the river.
Regulations and conservation
Mountain whitefish are classified as Secure in Alberta. Limits and seasons vary by water, so check the current Alberta Sportfishing Regulations.
On our guided trips, every fish is released unharmed.
Please also clean, drain and dry your waders, boots and gear between rivers to avoid spreading invasive species and fish diseases.
