The Crowsnest River originates near the Alberta-British Columbia border in Crowsnest Lake. It flows east through the mountains before reaching the communities of the Crowsnest Pass and continues its journey by joining the Oldman Dam reservoir after traveling about 30 miles. The Crowsnest River averages 50-feet in width, which makes it ideally suited to walk and wade fishing. The many bridges provide access to the river through its entire reaches.
The second stretch encompasses the river below Lundbreck Falls to the Oldman Dam reservoir. Again, this stretch offers excellent dry-fly, nymph and streamer fishing. This stretch also has many rainbow trout, but offers the chance to catch brown and bull trout as well. There are also small numbers of cutthroat trout in the system. The average size of fish in this stretch is again 14-16 inches. Prolific hatches of mayflies, caddis and stoneflies occur during the warm weather months. One of the true joys of fishing the
Crowsnest River is the opportunity to sight fish for large feeding trout.
